Hot dogs and the Fourth of July go hand and hand; and it was two years ago when my roommate said we should make Chicago hot dogs for our holiday guests. When I first heard of this "Chicago Hot Dog" I thought it was nothing more than a New York hot dog in Chicago. I couldn't Imagine there was anything different one could do to a hot dog other than your usual catsup, mustard, relish or the chili cheese preparation. Oh boy was I wrong. The Chicago Hot Dog, now one of my favorite ways to eat a hot dog and favorite Fourth of July menu item, is unlike any other form of dressing a sausage in a bun.
The ingredients are as follows:
Poppy seed bun
Steamed or boiled Venna Beef hot dog
Diced white onion
Pickle relish
Tomato wedges
Kosher pickle spear
Sport peppers
Yellow Mustard
Celery Salt
For those who haven't been raised thinking having a pickle spear and tomato wedges on their hot dogs is normal, I suggest printing out my How to Make a Chicago Hot Dog visual guide (above) to aide in assembly for you and your guests. These dogs are a hardy, flavor-filled summer time meal everyone will love no matter where you are from or where you eat it.
