I love Michael Leonard's late 70s early 80s scaffolding paintings. His paintings capture a moment in time when everyone looked like a porn star.

BYOB

Here's another great teaser video from JOHN for BYOB. BYOB or Bring Your Own Beamer is a single night event where artists bring projectors to exhibit their work that deals with projected light and the tangible. The event is Thursday February 28th from 6pm to 8pm at the RMIT Design Hub in Melbourne, Australia. For those who can't make it, like myself, we'll just have to watch this video.

Canadian Musician, Montag, aka Antoine Bedard (Carpark Records) creates a spacey electro mix of vintage gay porn sound tracks. The result is a surprising 44 minute  pleasant ambient track. Montag discusses the Gay Porn Archives Lo-Fi Mix below. 

 "It's hard to imagine that porn movie scores could be of any interest. You have to go quite far back in time in order to find surprisingly sophisticated "porn music". In the world of gay pornography, the late 70s and early 80s are an interesting era when it comes to music scores. Disco was still very popular of course and it was still used a lot but there was also a whole range of different moods out there. Being gay was not just about partying, it was also about being an outcast, living with forbidden compulsions... And I think it is what partly explains the use of much darker music in some gay films back then, including quite interesting electronic music. Of course, the vibe differs a lot from one movie to the other, but movies like "Turned On" (1982) or "Games" (1983) (both featuring legendary porn star Al Parker featured on the artwork) have some of the most interesting music I've ever encountered in film. Slow paced, very spacey, the music is so intriguing, I just felt compelled to share it. And by doing a bit more research, I came across a variety of scores that I thought would make a great mix. So here's the result, hope you enjoy it."

This obscene video, Let Me Tickle Your Fancy, is the collaborative work of Del Marquis, of Scissor Sisters fame, and Xavier, a friend of Marquis and electroclash singer. Marquis took time between albums with the Scissor Sisters to create a six track mixtape. The result, danceable, R&B influenced tracks sure to get some gay night club play time. A Fire in My Belly

"On Dec 1, 2010, a short video excerpt of "A Fire In My Belly" by David Wojnarowicz was pulled from the Hide/Seek exhibit at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery due to pressure from Republican lawmakers threatening the Smithsonian's funding."

Thanks to VandM.com, the Estate of David Wojnarowicz, and P.P.O.W Gallery the video, so scandalous some Republicans couldn't handle it, is available for us to watch from the comfort of our home. Here's the full silent 13 minute video featuring cockfighting, masturbation, bull fighting, fire blowers, wrestlers, and Mexican cripples. So you might not want to watch this at work or infront of the elderly.

This Club is a Haunted House

Last night season 5 of Rupaul's Drag Race premiered along with another highly anticipated drag film video. Sharon Needles, Season 4's reigning queen released her video for This Club is a Haunted House off of her album PG-13. Despite my support of the spooky queen I have to say I was just a little bit disappointed. Maybe she'll get it right with the next one!

I always have to post these promotional videos for Australia's John Homosocial parties. Previous videos have definitely been better however this video features a plywood wall which is looks really sophisticated despite the strange actives taking place in front of it.

Learning Mark Mcginnis' ABC's is no kids play! I recently had the pleasure of meeting the Brooklyn-based artist responsible for the series of very adult alphabet prints. My personal favorites include H is for Homo and M is for Merkin. Cómo Puedes Vivir Contigo Mismo?

Alex Anwandter is a Chilean musician who has received international attention for his electro pop tracks. Unfortunately, Anwandter owes some of his attention to a quite tragic event. Last March, 24 year-old Daniel Zamudio, a gay sales associate, was cut, beaten, and burned by a group of Neo Nazis in Anwandter's home town of Santiago, Chile. Zamudio died three weeks later from the anti-gay attack; sparking the Chilean government to push through hate crime legislation. At Zamudio's widely covered funeral Anwandter's music was played. Zamudio was a big fan of Anwandter and had spoken to Anwandter before the attack. Zamudio's parents encouraged Antwandter to use his music to advocate for gay rights and other people like Daniel Zamudio.



Anwandter's video for Cómo Puedes Vivir Contigo Mismo? is a ode to Jennie Livingston's documentary, Paris is Burning. An early 90s film documenting the ballroom scene in New York. Anwandter said:

Nothing like this happens in Santiago. And for me, that was kind of the whole point. My thoughts were: “Paris is Burning” is over 20 years old and we still have nothing like that in Chile. Nor does anyone know what “Paris is Burning” is. Let’s have people see something like that, in mainstream media for a change. If it helps just a little bit to promote a social environment where diversity is better tolerated, I’ll be satisfied.

Whether, he's sucessful with his goals or not, Anwandter's video is an enjoyable dance inducing time.

Uncle Grumpy

It's been quite a while since I've posted. The past few weeks have kept me extremely busy working 7 days a weeks with 12+ hour days. But It has come to an end and hopefully I won't have to work like that again, or at least not until next season.
Some how between working and sleeping I discovered an artist called Uncle Grumpy. Grumpy's work is obvious queer to say the least. But that has little to do with what draws me to his illustrations. There is a quality to the distortion of his figures, the yellowy tint of the paper, the gestural energy of the lines, and the transparency of the colors that feel familiar. Like illustrations from childhood books. I can't nail down the reference, but I want to say I know this already. I thought maybe they feel like Andy Warhol's early illustrations of cats and shoes, but that's not it. Whatever it is, I like it!
