Bubi Canal: Special Moment

This past Wednesday evening, recently relocated, Spanish multimedia artist, Bubi Canal had the reception for his opening solo show at Munch Gallery. Canal's work is a combination of video art, photography, and product design. Canal's new show juxtaposes child-like primary colored objects and costumes against beautiful landscapes and scenery in a short film and a series of photographs. Check out Canal's show Special Moment now until March 10th at the Munch Gallery.
  

Frida

Photographer, Luis Carlos Aguayo created this series of images inspired by Frida Kahlo and her work. Models, Gianluca di Sotto, Pol Gerez, and Roger Balduino are clothed by designer Tom Rebl and are styled with Mexican textiles, unibrows, and floral head pieces.

Sophia Sophia

I love my friend Sophia Sophia and so does my friend Sophia. I met her several years ago when we were in art school at Pratt Institute. At the time her focus was on jewelry and metal work, since then her work has evolved to a multitude of mediums. One thing that hasn't changed is her focus on handcraft.

In her latest series of work Sophia creates dolls that function as real life avatars. These tangible handcrafted doppelgangers are her way of commenting on "the loneliness of artificial human connections created through the Internet" and "this era of self-obsession." 

In these photographs, taken by Steven Gorgos, the artist is captured wearing herself, presenting her avatar the way she wishes to be perceived along with her actual self. In the words of the artist "the more of myself, the better." 

Angela Lansbury is the Gentlewoman

Angela Lansbury, one of my favorite ladies of all time, is on the cover of the newest issue of The Gentlewoman. I can't wait to pick up an issue with photos shot by photographer Terry Richardson (those glasses sure look familiar!) The Autumn & Winter publication is available September 15th in the UK and worldwide thereafter.

Historic Cape May City

While Vacationing in near by Wildwood Crest, New Jersey, I spent some time capturing the lovely home of Historic Cape May City. Below is a brief history of that very special place.

New Jersey's Cape May City was founded in 1620 by Dutch explorers who named it Cape Island. Not until 1869 did the city get its' present day title of Cape May City. 

At the tip of New Jersey, Cape May became a popular resort destination for residents of near by Philadelphia by the mid 1700's, making it the oldest resort town in America. Not only is it the oldest, it is also the only town in America to be wholly deemed a national historic landmark. This unique classification is due to it having the second largest collections of Victorian homes (San Francisco has the first). The many beautifully intricately detail structures were built after a five day fire in 1878 destroying most of the town. Replacement structures were then built in the victorian style and have been preserved in their close to original state.

Amazing Bodies

One thing that I will always be amazed by are the incredible bodies of athletes. I'm far from athletic. In fact, the only thing I was good at in high school gym was "fitness walking." Anyone with any physical coordination and athletic ability completely wows me. I love these images of the stripped down olympians from ESPN's 2012 Bosy Issue. I love seeing the athletes caught in mid-movement. See more all the pictures at espn.com.

 

An Unlikely Pairing

Tattboy

I started a new tumblr, Tattboy, a sort of inspiration board filled with pictures of men with tattoos. You should follow my new tumblr Tattboy as well as my others, Beardboy and Fish Condo.  

Summer of 1925

So far, the summer of 2012 has been filled with long hours sewing, painting, scrubbing, and lifting. This I couldn't say was the same for my grandmother and her brother during the summer of 1925. While going through some of the family photos I had on my laptop, I came across dozens of beach shots in front of summer cottages from places like Smuggler's Notch, Joe's Pond, and Swift's Beach. From May to August it seems Pauline and Bud Ramsdell visited all the resort towns of New England. I wish I could just get a moment to hop on the bus to Jacob Riis for a day! In the mean time I'll just enjoy the beach sand through the photos of my ancestors. 

SS13 Trend: Tattoos

This past spring I started to get this itch to get a tattoo. I have none at the moment but always wanted to get at least one. That itch started to become an obsessed with the idea of covering my entire body with them.  As usual I'm just on trend. This season at the Spring Summer 2013 Men's shows the trend that stands out the most is not something created by fashion designers. This season, the biggest trend is in model casting. More than in past seasons, I've noticed more full body tattooed models. Men tattooed from head to toe have been strutting down the runways of labels like Pringle of Scotland, Costume National, and Diesel Black Gold. While I love this look, I worry that my desire to cover my body with tatts will be as long lasting as a models career. Am I just a slave to fashion or is this a lifelong passion?
